Field artillery has been an essential weapon in major conflicts; either to soften up an enemy prior to an assault or, as a defensive weapon, to break up an invading force. Artillery systems can be divided into two types of systems, towed and self-propelled. Though the modern militaries have put more emphasis on lighter self-propelled systems in the recent years, to accommodate the faster pace of modern land warfare, more and more armed forces began to place greater emphasis on the strategic mobility of their howitzers.
