The Indonesian Armed Forces-Modernisation Underway

The Indonesian National Armed Forces or Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) marked its 69th anniversary on Oct 7 this year with a display of strength and capability. More than 20,000 armed forces personnel including a large number of military aircraft, combat vehicles and warships participated in the celebration at a sprawling military garrison. This was considered the biggest event ever to take place during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's 10 years in office. At the parade held in Surabaya, Commander of the Armed Forces Gen Moeldoko said that the display of firepower showcased how the government was meeting its obligations and highlighted TNI's capabilities globally. The military improved tremendously under President Yudhoyono's leadership securing various orders for tanks, missiles, helicopters, submarines and fighters from countries such as Germany, US and South Korea. Yudhoyono stepped down in late October to make way for president-elect Joko Widodo.
