Security Boost by Southeast Asian Forces to Prevent lslamic State Terror Base

The months-long fighting in Marawi City in southern Philippines has prompted neighbours to boost existing security cooperation to counter extremists of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS)/Daesh group bent on gaining a foothold in the region as it loses grounds in the Middle East. The seizure of city's business district and the fierce resistance by the rebels who have pledged allegiance to Daesh has alarmed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) who fear that the group, on a backfoot in Iraq and Syria, is trying to set up a sub-caliphate in the restive southern Philippines that could threaten the whole.
