Technical complications and bandwidth inefficiencies look set to prevent voice over IP from becoming prevalent within GSM-based mobile networks beyond playing the role of a transmission technology across the backbone. Instead of VoIP developing into a widely adopted mass-market service proposition within the GSM environment, it is now expected to become an application as part of a bundled package for corporate customers with data accounts. Analysts, among them Greg Collins from the U.S.-based Dell'Oro Group, confirmed that IP is used as a transport mechanism today, but could not predict when it would be extended into the air interface or even when it would be offered as a service.
