The Internet is starting to play a major role in mobile, but for Asian operators, the transition away from a focus on operator portals is causing serious concerns, according to senior industry executives who spoke at the CommunicAsia conference in Singapore June 21. "The Internet is coming to mobile in a big way," Daniel Pacthod, a partner at global consulting firm McKinsey, told delegates. "A few years back, we started to have a hyped debate about high-speed Internet on mobile. [Today] this is real, and I think this is happening." McKinsey estimates that the global market for mobile and fixed-line digital-content services is worth US$2 trillion, with telcos accounting for about 40% of the revenue.
