Govt. Powers Agree At Last To Restructure Telecoms Industry

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao and the country's three regulatory powerhouses have all agreed that the country's telecoms companies should be restructured, paving the way for China Unicom to be split up and sold by year-end. Wen and the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) both threw their weight behind restructuring in early March. In a March 5 working report, Premier Wen said that the telecoms industry will undergo restructuring in 2007, and the SASAC noted in a March 7 working report that the telecoms sector is targeted for accelerated restructuring this year.
