SKT completes 5G interoperability test; reports 319,976 5G subscribers

South Korean mobile network operator (MNO) SK Telecom (SKT) and local vendor Samsung have announced the successful completion of what they claim is the country's first interoperability assessment between 5G Standalone (SA) Core and other commercial network systems over a 5G network. In a press release, the pair confirmed that the tests have brought them one step close to 5G SA commercialization, and noted that the 5G SA Core - jointly developed by the MNO and Samsung Electronics - not only supports technologies including network slicing and function modularization based on 3GPP standards, but also offers additional functions that operators have been using since LTE, include billing, subscriber management and operational convenience system. With the interoperability assessment said to be the final stage for verifying the validity of 5G SA data transmission, signifying that the SA system is ready to be launched for commercial service, once commercialized benefits are expected to include a three-fold improvement in data processing efficient, 'allowing efficient control for supporting massive data traffic'.
