At the turn of the twentieth century, the question of how new technology could be utilised to achieve greater speed of passage was, uppermost on the collective society's agenda. That the issue then focused on the movement of people rather than on the transport of data and video streams just serves to accentuate how readily humankind has embraced the onset of information technology, and in particular of its digital dynamic. Not only do we now expect to move freely between cities, countries and continents, but we also demand that our thoughts and expressions are transmitted at an even greater pace. The quality of service offered by telcos, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and cable and satellite operators has become as critical to our daily lives as that of the railway and airline companies.
