Thanks to revolutionary advances in fibre optic technology, the capacity of a single undersea cable system, roughly 640Gbit/s, now exceeds the combined throughput of all the world's 200 commercial communications satellites - which can be estimated to be around 260Gbit/ s. Yet no worldwide voice or data network is complete without satellites.
