Industrial environments differ from other types of environments where rescue operations need to be carried out, mainly because of the additional risks they present. The presence of polluting gases, atmospheres with low oxygen levels, cramped and poorly lit environments, or hot and live parts of equipment can generate risks that are completely different from mountain, urban or water environments. Statistics show that most accidents in industrial confined spaces are characterized by respiratory problems including hypoxia intoxication and poisoning. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that more than 75% of problems related to life-threatening atmospheres are the leading cause of death in confined-space activities. NIOSH estimates that about 60% of fatalities in confined spaces are those who attempt to rescue colleagues.
