Taiwan's Booming FPD Industry Builds Fabs to Sustain Growth

Taiwan's display industry has T moved rapidly, shifting from a heavy focus on twisted-nematic and other passive-matrix LCDs less than a decade ago, to brisk efforts targeting organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, thin-film transistor (TFT) CDs, and flat panels suitable for digital TVs. Carrying out these tasks requires makers to build their financial and technological resources simultaneously. This year, the total investment by Taiwan's flat-panel display (FPD) industry may reach NT$228.9 billion. According to Monshen Chen, Research Manager of the Display Department at the Industrial Economics & Knowledge Center of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (IEK/ITRI), total investments by the Taiwanese FPD industry amounted to NT$298 billion between 1998 and 2001. This figure includes investments in panels, color filters, controller and driver ICs, and related components.
