Mobile phones have made wireless communications ubiquitous, and now these handsets have become ubiquitous themselves. The global market for mobile phones now exhibits polarity between advanced models for mature markets and entry-level models for emerging markets (Fig. 1). The hit products in mature markets continue to adopt progressively smaller, thinner designs, while offering more functions and more advanced levels of functionality than ever before.
