Robust Electronics Market Drives Capacitors to New Highs

The demand for capacitors has been increasing in the three major markets of smartphones, automobiles, and industrial equipment. Leading component manufacturers have been stepping up the development of new products focusing on ultraminiature products for smartphones, high-reliability products for automobiles, and high-performance types for industrial equipment. Manufacturers aim to expand sales in the global market. According to statistics compiled by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), global shipments of capacitors in terms of value have been steadily increasing, although in single-digit annual growth. In Sept. 2014, Dempa Publications, Inc. projected the shipment value for FY2014 to reach ¥850 billion. However, there are mounting opinions to revise upward the projected figure to about ¥870 billion on the basis of the industry trend in February (Fig. 1).
