The JSP Records three-disc set Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953 presents so-nphisticated listeners of historic recordings with a astonishing treasure trove of sixty-seven ntracks from the Sherry Mayrent Collection of classic Yiddish 78-rpm recordings. As she nnotes in her informative introduction, Mayrent has been inspired to share her burgeoning ncollection of vintage Yiddish recorded material because she has calculated that from among nthe more than 10,000 Yiddish performances captured on 78s while America’s Yiddish nculture thrived, more or less in the date range noted in the title, there have been merely n435 performances issued “and approximately 80 of those are items which appear on more nthan one CD. This means that at best, only about 4% of the potentially available material nhas been made accessible to interested listeners.” Such a fact only underscores the historic nvalue of this set with, hopefully, more of the neglected material to come.
