Audite has released Hans Knappertsbusch: The Complete RIAS Recordings, a collec-ntion of broadcast recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra made between n1950 and 1952 (21.405, 5 CDs). Of primary interest in this collection are three Bruck-nner performances – two of Symphony No. 9 from 28 and 30 January 1950, and one of nSymphony No. 8 from 8 January 1951. The 8th and the frst performance of the 9th are nunedited “studio” recordings, capturing a complete performance in front of an empty hall n(like Furtwängler’s “Magnetophon” concerts). Though certain passages in these largely ndiscredited editions will raise eyebrows – the 1892 Joseph Schalk for the 8th and the n1903 Löwe for the 9th – the performances are so compelling that the listener cannot nhelp but see the forest amidst the trees (see John Berky’s Bruckner Symphony Versions nDiscography, www.abruckner.com, for an indispensable guide to this ever-thorny issue).
