Mahler's Unfinished Legacy: Exploring the Discography of the Tenth Symphony.

Among the works of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), the unfinished Tenth Symphony stands apart from his other scores because of the various posthumous completions which have achieved remarkable popularity in the century after the composer's death. Recordings are a critical part of the reception of the work, with the documentation of the Tenth in sound complementing the secondary literature in print as vivid evidence of posthumous evolution of the work and the ways in which it can be performed. Various discographies of Mahler's Tenth exist, and an analysis of the releases is important for understanding the factors which support the place of this unique score within the composer's oeuvre. Because Mahler's symphonies require relatively large forces, in his lifetime his music was heard relatively less frequently than in early twenty-first centuries. In the early to mid-twentieth century, the available recordings offered listeners around the world what was sometimes difficult to hear in concerts/as audio technology brought Mahler's music to audiences when conductors could not do so in live performances. As much as this situation is part of the legacy of Mahler's completed works, it is even more important for the composer left it unfinished. Yet as apiece that was completed posthumously and became known after its composer's death, the reception of the Tenth Symphony relies on recorded media, as much as concert performances, as it gradually became an accepted part of Mahler's works.
