Sometimes I like to distinguish songsters from bluesmen with my realization that whennsongsters were young and most active (1890s-1910s), there were not many blues songs tonperform, only the very first blues. So the songsters had to play a variety of music, includingndances, stomps, and ballads. On the other hand, bluesmen after 1910 were rapidly writingnnew blues with short note-values to allow for instrumental responses to vocal calls, and withnlyrics in the first-person instead of in the third-person. With the new assertive first-personnlyrics, bluesmen could take on more interesting personas than their songster predecessors.
