As the anniversaries of the Battle of Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, fought from November 1944 through January 1945, pass, notable in both battles were the role and contributions of the 28th Infantry Division.Though heavily engaged in the Hurtgen Forest and critical to eventual Allied victory in the Battle of the Bulge, both fought along Europe's Western Front, the 28th Infantry Division's role is sometimes overlooked. Other units are more likely to be in the limelight, including the 2nd Infantry Division, 4th Armored Division, 101st Airborne Division and Third U.S. Army.Nicknamed the "Keystone Division," as well as the "Bloody Bucket Division" for its red Pennsylvania keystone insignia division shoulder patch that resembled a red bucket, the 28th was a National Guard unit f ederalized into the Regular Army as the U.S. entered World War Ⅱ.
