President Joe Biden has nominated Michael A. Brown for under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustain-ment (A&S). Brown, a former CEO of Symantec, joined the DoD in September 2018 as head of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a small office dedicated to increasing ties between DOD and commercial technology firms. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin Ⅲ announced on Mar. 6 that the president has nominated Army LTG Laura J. Richardson for appointment to the grade of general, and assignment as commander, U.S. Southern Command, Doral, Florida. Richardson is currently serving as commanding general, U.S. Army North, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. If confirmed by the Senate, she will be only the second Army Aviator to serve as a Combatant Commander - GEN Doug Brown commanded U.S. Special Operations Command; and the second female four-star in Army history - GEN Ann Dunwoody being the first in 2008. A Senior Army Aviator, she is a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot who flew in combat during the Iraq War in 2003.
