JAGM: Coming Soon to A Theater Near You

The AH-64 Apache Helicopter is increasing its versatility and firepower with updates to the Area Weapons System (AWS) 30 mm gun, the inclusion of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System (APKWS) laser guided rocket with the M151 High Energy Point Detonating (HEPD), and the addition of the highly anticipated AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM). The JAGM will ultimately replace the AGM-114 HELLFIRE family of missiles for several platforms, including the Army's AH-64D/E Attack Helicopters. The HELLFIRE family includes the Semi-Active Laser (SAL) HELLFIRE Ⅱ AGM-114K, M, N, and R variants and the Millimeter Wave (MMW) radar AGM-114 LONGBOW variant guidance types. The SAL HELLFIRE Ⅱ uses laser energy reflected off a target for guidance, this requires the Operator to lase the target for the full engagement. The LONGBOW uses MMW radar guidance for beyond-line-of-sight, fire-and-forget capability, allowing the ability to operate in adverse weather and battlefield conditions.
