PEACEKEEPING IN PRIDNESTROVIE

Russian peacekeeping group (RPKG) was formed in the Transnistri-an region of Moldova on 1 July, 1995 on the basis of disbanded 14th Guards Army. RPKG performs peacekeeping tasks in the region. The group numbers more than a thousand of soldiers, warrant offi- cers and officers. RPKG consists of two infantry battalions, security and logistics battalion, ammunition depot and field services. Major-general Boris Sergeev is heading the group. As is generally known sanguinary armed conflict between self-proclaimed Transnistrian Republic and Moldova took place in 1992. There is no peace here up to now. Political issue of status of the Transnistrian Republic remains unsettled. Unwillingness of the Moldova President, Vladimir Vronin, to sign approved Memorandum of resolving Transnistrian conflict in 2003 shows instability of peacekeeping process, which lasts 12 years. This fact indirectly proves suspicions of Transnistrian citizens, that Kishinev is capable to use military force in this conflict if the Russian group is withdrawn.
