Foundation for success: "Embraer was created on 19 August 1969, primarily to be the industrial arm of the Brazilian Air Force, devel-oping and producing the EMB 110 Ban-deirante, designed to replace the legendary DC-3, and to assemble under license the Ital-ian MB326 advanced training aircraft. Together, the two projects gave Embraer the foundations to start its path to success. "During the early seventies, with a mature and very flexible product, the EMB 110, Embraer entered the international market through the military and special versions segment. A modified EMB 110 platform, tailored for the maritime patrol role, named EMB 111 "Bandeirante Patrulha," was exported to the Chilean navy and those aircraft are still operating there today. Due to the oil crisis and the lack of American-made regional aircraft, the Bandeirante made its debut in the US in 1978.
