This magnificent work will become an indispensable volume for all working on the religious, political and social history of Scotland in the twelfth century - its importance ranges well beyond the bishops whose 259 charters and letters Norman Shead has collected and edited here. In historiographical terms, no history of that episcopate has been possible to date, in contrast to a massive bibliography for the English bishops of this period, but it can now be undertaken. Indeed, the first 30 introductory pages of this volume provide by far the best and most comprehensive and thorough history of the Scottish episcopate of this formative period in the history of the Scottish Church.
