At the corner of Vassar and Main streets on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge, Mass., stands a relatively humble memorial amidst architectural landmarks such as the Ray and Maria Stata Center by Frank Gehry, faia, and the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex by Charles Correa, hon. faia. The curvilinear vault made from 190 tons of granite celebrates the life of Sean Collier, the MIT police officer killed on April 18, 2013, three days after the Boston Marathon bombing. After his death, mourners from the campus, the city, and beyond had created a makeshift memorial at this corner, where he was shot in his squad car.
