When John and Sue Cray moved from the city to a 1,000-square-foot, 1980s rambler outside of Stillwater, they had an equally small budget and three school-age children. But they loved the house's "gorgeous setting," says Sue. Located adjacent to a winding, dead-end road next to an old railroad track that had been converted into a hiking/biking trail, the house sits within a cluster of mature oak trees and overlooks wetlands and native grasses. "So we all packed in here," Sue says. "It's a small but sound house. And-shhh-we put an illegal bedroom in the basement."
