Irvine Park, St. Paul

The Irvine Park neighborhood is located just west of downtown St. Paul between West Seventh and the Mississippi River. It was originally platted in the 1850s. The park itself, aVictorian square studded with majestic bur oaks, is the heart of an enclave whose buildings trace more than a century of architectural history. The park was renovated, true to its original layout, in the 1970s in the midst of a total refurbishing of the entire residential square, and it has changed little since. Through 150 years, whenever demolition was threatened, the public rallied to preserve Irvine Park. Why? Well, it has great history, but people also feel it's just a nice place to be. So what about its design is pulling at everyone's heartstrings?
