Artist lofts tell us as much about ourselves as they do about the place of artists in our society. Artists have long sought out low-rent quarters to make ends meet and to meet the end of having suitable space in which to work. Where that once often meant occupying the garrets under the roofs of walk-up apartments, it came to mean, in the 20th century, inhabiting the industrial lofts that manufacturers had abandoned as they moved production lines to the suburbs or other less expensive locations.
