Urban Landscapes at the 'Angewandte'

The vast remoteness of the Sibirian landscape provided the starting points for the design of a ,,Center for Phytogenetic Research and Preservation". The isolation of this biological-medical research laboratory (which is a requirement of the kind of work carried out there) exerted an influence on Elisabeth Brauner's design of the architectural volume. Closed units screen it off from the outside world. Reminiscent of a better kind of spy film, this building is read from a bird's eye view. On the other hand the wealth of plant seeds contained in the interior forms a sharp contrast to the emptiness of the icy landscape of the steppe. The way in which this project depicts the dualism of microcosm and macrocosm is most impressive.
