In June we experienced what are currently two of the best-known sides of the Mediterranean theme. Three of the four teams in the semi-final of the European Football Champion-ships came from the "Club Med" (Portugal, Spain, Italy) -only Germany preserved the honour of northern Europe. At the same time in Brussels the political representatives of exactly the same countries were sweating over the hotly debated question of shared loan guarantees. Joy in playing on the one side, the crushing burden of debt on the other. image can even be transferred to architecture. The curves, prisms and white surfaces of the two Spanish auditoriums that we present on the following pages are every bit as elegant as Mediterranean soccer playing. But the history of their construction and current use is not entirely free from mishaps, details not completely worked out, and excessively optimistic assumptions. This is precisely what constitutes the attraction of the relatively untroubled Mediterranean life style. Here what makes everyday life easier and encourages the cohesion of society seems to be important - but how to achieve this in concrete and financial terms does not always seem to be the focal point of considerations.
