Unconstrained appropriation The fishing town and seaside resort Aguilas (population c. 35,000) lies almost precisely in the middle of the much-visited southern part of Spain's Mediterranean coast but, as if by miracle, it has been preserved from the towers of hotel bedrooms built for mass tourism in Benidorm as well as from the phenomenon of ghettos consisting of luxury villas for the jet-set, like in Mar-bella. In view of the crisis that has taken hold of Spain the international competition for a combination of concert hall and culture centre set up in 2004 might lead one to fear the worst. But it could be a good thing if the architectural gem by Barozzi & Veiga (Barcelona) can sustainably boost both the small town's cultural life as well as supra-regional conference tourism.
