The city and the car

No other invention changed the city in the 20th century quite as radically as the motor car. It was a measure of social status, and mass motorization a symbol and motor of progress that entirely subordinated urban space to the demands of mobility. Urban planners, architects and politicians were among those who in the 1970s still euphorically welcomed and furthered this progress.
