The Literature Museum in the former k.k. Hofkammerarchiv Vienna

The Hofkammerarchiv on Johannes-gasse in Vienna was reputed to be Central Europe's oldest surviving purpose-built archive building. It has been converted into the Literature Museum of the National Library. Exhibiting literature is a little like exhibiting architecture or music. The exhibition can never match the experience of the original. However, as well as imparting knowledge, good exhibitions can also offer an auratic experience. In the case of the Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library the existing spatial situation offered a favourable starting point for providing just such an experience.
