摘要

Unusually, the late Gothic hall church of St George is located at first floor level. The Emperor entombed here was what we today would describe as quite "outstanding". A term which is equally applicable to the adaptation of the interior by Martin and Werner Feiersinger.January 2019 saw the 500th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian. During his lifetime he was a man who sought for significant challenges. Tradition says that he always took his coffin with him on his travels, leaving nothing to chance. Long before his death he himself planned his final resting place. Instead of the Hofkirche in Innsbruck he chose St. George's Cathedral in Wiener Neustadt, a part of the former castle, which is today a military academy and was the place where he was born and christened. For the new concept and redesign of the interior of this church, which was painstakingly reconstructed after destruction in the Second World War, an invited competition was held from which the creative brothers architect Martin and sculptor Werner Feiersinger emerged as winners. The task was to provide a new framework for the liturgy so that the anniversary and all the masses of the diocese in the future can be celebrated with a new radiance. Notwithstanding the restraint exercised and the careful integration of symbols and traditions, a new ambiance for religious services has been created with both priest and congregation at eye level. The two-brothers thought it important to clearly separate the area with the tomb from the space in which mass is celebrated. One of the conceptual milestones was to move the baptismal font in which Maximilian was christened from the rear right-hand corner into the central axis of the ch. This creates a kind of "street" of Maximilian's i life that runs from the place of his baptism, below the raised reliquary, past the 1 community at prayer, and up to the altar i and the seven steps underneath which his tomb is located.
