Shelving for test modules At first glance the small community of Dübendorf on Zurich's north-eastern periphery seems little different to many other lost places on the outskirts of large cities: extensive industrial and office parks, small historical village cores and oversized transport infrastructures. But Dübendorf is also the headquarters of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology (EMPA), on whose campus, at the address no. 129 Ueberlandstrasse, since 2016 a highly interesting research and demonstration building has been located that is dedicated entirely to the future of building. The evocative project name NEST in fact stands for "Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technologies" and is nothing other than an open services structure made up of four platforms stacked on top of each other, in which 12-15 differently dimensioned modules for practice tests that are as realistic as possible can be inserted and docked. The only unchanging aspect of this building, which was designed by architects Gramazio & Kohler and cost 20 million Swiss francs, is its core and reinforced concrete frame with the building circulation, technical service runs and several seminar rooms, which can be augmented temporarily by adding other spaces in the research modules.
