We start the year with an innovation that conveys our focal themes in an even more easy to read way: in a small trailer at the start of the theme section the quintessential content is summarised, thus providing a clearer overview of the magazine and easier orientation in the interviews, essays and project reports that follow. Our selection of themes for the ten comprehensive annual issues also represents our assessment of the central agenda of the architecture business. We have listed them on our website architektur-aktuell.at. For 2019 we have undertaken, among other things, to ask the important energy question as regards building (in this first issue), to showcase the work of women architects, to present an issue about the youngest generation of architects, and to take a close look at Poland, an ambitious European architecture market. Naturally, we will continue to offer our tried and tested formats: the theme section of each issue is followed by critical reports on the relevant national and international architecture competitions, the results of which stimulate the architecture debate through the exemplary solutions they offer. And the reports on innovative and newly realised buildings from Austria and Europe, which form the third section of the main part, will be continued as usual. This is illustrated by the present issue in that we present an exemplary handling of existing building fabric (the renovation of two buildings of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna by Riepl Kaufmann Bammer) and document a multi-functional high-rise that fulfils key urban functions (The Pema high-rise in Innsbruck by LAAC-Architektlnnen). In short: once again we offer a great deal of illustrative and reading material about the technically, aesthetically and socially most ambitious buildings of the present-day.
