Exibition review: Chanel Mobile Art: May 31-July 4, 2008 National Yoyogi Stadium Olympic Plaza, Tokyo, Japan

The Chanel, Mobile Art exhibition was held from May 31 through July 4 at the National Yoyogi Stadium Olympic Plaza in Tokyo. After opening in Hong Kong in February' of 2008, the exhibition with its mobile pavilion designed by Zaha Hadid was transported and reassembled in Tokyo. It will make further stops in New York, London, Moscow, and Paris, taking it to a total of seven cities around the world. Coco Chanel was known for supporting as-yet unknown artists and helping to launch their careers. This exhibition inherits that tradition through a contemporary collaboration between Chanel and 20 artists from around the world. Each artist was asked to create a work that was at least partly inspired by Chanel's classic 2.55 quilted handbag (so named because it was first shown in February 1955), which for more than half a century has represented for women a world filled with freedom, elegance, and creativity.
