Roppongi-Itchome Station Izumi Garden

Izumi Garden is a mixed-use redevelopment project comprising 21 hectares of total floor area on some 2.4 hectares of sloping land surrounded by a busy Metropolitan Expressway and rich green ridge-top roads leading to foreign embassies and hotels in the area. This site, with a backdrop of beautiful gardens, once featured narrow roads and aged wooden houses set along sloping and terraced plots of land that posed concerns in terms of fire prevention and living environment. The intricate landform meant most of the site was without major street frontage, leaving the site underdeveloped for business use. The prospect of opening of a station for the new subway line that runs alongside the Metropolitan Expressway triggered a redevelopment plan for this area in1994. The plan envisaged the development of a "21st Century City" that harmonizes urban bustle with a living environment rich in nature. The undulated profile of the land was utilized for spatial design that brings light and greenery into the subway station.
