Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the directors, said something that struck me deeply at our first meeting. "We would like you to view this Pavilion series as the Barcelona Pavilion of our time." A temporary building gives a form to people's premonitions of a new age. With that pavilion as a watershed, history changes, and people take notice that a new era has come. They also told me: "Although this pavilion must be Sou Fujimoto's architecture, it should not be Sou Fujimoto's architecture." The Pavilion, this meant, should summarize all I have thought about architecture, these past 20 years, but at the same time, they wanted me to take a new step forward, away from the Sou Fujimoto of the past. What I could do was examine myself - as I am now and as I was in the past - and look to the future. I could also look hard at the history of architecture and at architecture today, and try to intuit the architecture of the future. Then, I could ponder human history, look broadly at our world today, and imagine people's lives in the future with joyful expectation.
