Themes and Variations: RCR Aranda Pigem Vilalta Arquitectes

The architecture of Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta('RCR') is based upon a consistent set of principles and a corresponding family of forms. Over the years they have defined central themes and a recognisable architectural language. Their buildings are understated but have a strong presence in landscape or city. While impressive in photographs, they really need to be experienced directly as they heighten the perception of space, materials and surroundings. RCR have received international recognition but reject shifting fashions and steer clear of the 'icons' of the star system. Avoiding sensationalist imagery, they employ an evocative abstraction to explore the frontiers between the natural and the artificial. RCR react to existing features of the terrain and reveal new dimensions in the topography of each place but they cannot be restricted to a local or contextual agenda. Relying upon steel, glass and other modern materials, their buildings intensify the experience of light, shade, earth, rocks, trees, water and air. They appeal to all of the senses including touch and sound. They exist in a middle zone between architecture, sculpture and landscape design.
