St. Knut and St. Gertrud Chapels (1936-1943)

The final versions of the two main Crematory Chapels, named after St. Knut and St. Gertrud, show Lewerentz moving away from the declamatory potential of architecture. Instead, the pillars of the two chapels' canopies are dimensioned such that they relate to the adjoining tree trunks; the layered composition and partially open slotted construction of the canopies (delicately renovated by Johan Celsing in 2015) echo tree foliage. Both chapels are set deep into the thickly planted interior of the cemetery. The two chapels mark the end of a long thought process which began with exposed Palladian and neoclassical chapel designs for all to see, on high levels of the topography, and ended with introverted chapels that can be considered as symbiotic partners of the vegetative landscape.
