Barcelona is one of the densest cities in Europe, and its need for public space has become increasingly evident during the current pandemic. Citizens of the city are expressing their demands more openly than ever before, as demonstrated by social movements and calls for reductions in pollution and noise. In response, the city of Barcelona is committed to providing more public spaces and enabling greater mobility, particularly for pedestrians, to create a more livable city. The Superblocks Program, launched in the wake of the 2013 Urban Mobility Plan, is a model with a vision and transformative capacity for the entire city. It is a process of sequential transformation of the set of streets in all of Barcelona's neighborhoods and districts. Through the concept of the superblock a new Barcelona emerges, a city of green streets and gathering spaces that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, in addition to reordering and making the public transportation, bicycle, and private mobility networks more efficient, a new pedestrian network is generated, defined by the new green axes that connect the city. This new way of seeing the city integrates and guides all actions within it to transform the city's public space. The objectives of the Barcelona Superblocks Program are to make the city healthier and more livable, with shorter distances for moving within it. Putting people's health in the foreground, superblocks have more efficient and safer routes for walking, promote an active lifestyle, expand space for social relationships, and foster a greener and more naturalized city with rich biodiversity.
