Guilin Pavilion

摘要

In Guilin, large banyan trees are an important feature that combines with the tower karst to provide the city's scenery. Inside the south gate of the castle wall, conservation trees have been planted symmetrically, one 170 years old, and the other 220. The aged trees have been positioned to protect the gate, and they form an arch so high it seems to enclose one single building. These trees protect people from intense sunlight and form places where people gather. In this proposal, the south gate pavilion will provide a canopied space akin to one created by 2 banyan trees for people to gather. Since the existing South gate cannot take a heavy load on the top, the 2 structural columns are placed symmetrically outside the gate, contrasting with the existing banyan trees. Structurally, laminated bamboo material will be used. We currently have this material underdevelopment in Anji city, as replacement for importing laminated timber. Meanwhile the roof is covered by traditional Chinese tiles to blend into the surroundings.
