In 2007, the artist Ai Wei Wei curated a project of 100 villas to be built in the town of Ordos in Inner Mongolia. Aptly named Ordos 100, a hundred international architects were invited to participate. Master planned by Ai Wei Wei as a loose matrix of detached boxes distributed in a suburban setting, each architect was charged to design a villa of 1,000 m~2. While examples of this type of collective development are abundant in history - from the early twentieth century Building Expositions such as Mies van der Rohe's Weissenhof Sieldlung, to the late 20th century developer-driven projects such as Arata Isozaki's Nexus World in Fukuoka - few had approached the scale and scope of the Ordos 100 project.
