Tange's Yoyogi, World's Yoyogi

National Gymnasiums for Tokyo Olympics (also known as Yoyogi National Gymnasiums, Yoyogi Gymnasiums), designed by Kenzo Tange (1913-2005) as a key venue of the Summer Olympic Games in 1964, is by most accounts the greatest building by the greatest architect of twentieth century Japan. This monographic volume on Yoyogi Gymnasiums, published on the eve of the second Summer Olympics to be held in the same city, reframes this extraordinary building both in the exceptional circumstances of its time, when modern architecture in Japan and Tokyo as a metropolis were undergoing profound transformations, and in the historical impact this building has had in the intervening 55 years on the profession and on the city.
