The proposed Australian Opal Centre (AOC) is a research and education facility for Lightning Ridge, an iconic mining town with the largest deposit of black opals in the world. Off the grid and without any town services, the site is adjacent to the historic 3-mile open-cut mine, the most extensively worked mine in the region. In this semi-arid region, summer temperatures can reach into a high of around 40 ℃ and winter temperatures can fall to below 5℃.
