The Chicago Tribune Column

The design competition for the Chicago Tribune Tower was held in 1922, in a bid to find the world's most beautiful office building. Designs for the head office of the Chicago Tribune were solicited from architects all around the world, and a total of 263 proposals were received from Europe and America. Loos proposed a design in which the form of a Doric column became the building itself. Its height, as stipulated by the competition, was 400 feet, and was made up of 11 foundation levels and 21 layers of pillars. An abacus was attached to the very top, while the columns were fluted. The building was apparently finished in polished black granite.
