I first encountered selgascano's architecture when my partner Kazuyo Sejima served as Director of the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2010. Among several exhibitors we selected from the world, selgascano was one of the architects we particularly paid attention to. Their powerful and new approach to architecture set them apart from other contemporary architects in Spain. In the final stage of the exhibitor selection, we visited their office and met them for the first time. After a while, Jose asked me to write an essay for their upcoming monograph by El Croquis. They took me on a tour to see their built works 一 we drove around Spain in an old Citroen. We stopped by Madrid, Merida, and other cites to see their architecture and finally arrived at the auditorium in Cartagena (EL "B" Cartanega Auditorium and Congress Center, See pp. 50-65) where we met up with Sejima.
