In late 2005 after a conversation with Claude Ho about plans for the construction of a new youth training centre in Thyolo, Malawi, I began scribbling building designs. Somewhat limited by my professional skills as a landscape architect, I suggested to Claude that we find a real architect to be involved in the project. With any luck a like-minded person or team could take our scribbles of intent, and transform what could have been a useful but somewhat institutional building into a building which facilitates community development and learning, improves amenity, is environmentally sustainable, and is able to be built to a very tight budget by local trades. In January 2006 Sydney-based practice Sam Crawford Architects (SCA) offered to commit time and energy to work with us on a pro bono basis.
