A degree in architecture does not quite prepare you for the complexities of practice. Not that any university education allows you to seamlessly transition into the workplace, not that any university education should, but it does raise the question of where graduates are supposed to seek this knowledge once they leave the hallowed halls of higher education. For most graduates the next logical step is employment. So you fumble your way through the doors of whoever will take you and so begins the next phase of your education. Little consideration is given to the profound impact this decision could have on your life, as you may have just entered into a job rather than a career. In years gone by, the Institute has presided over a successful student mentoring program, however, DARCH is interested in how graduate-level mentoring might encourage participants to take a more strategic approach to their development outside those aforementioned halls. A good mentor could be a sounding board, an opportunity for graduates to raise their eyes from their feet to the road ahead, they could build confidence and motive. By supporting graduates through these formative years, a mentor can help them find relevance and passion in practice. Graduates might also emerge at the pointy end of our profession willing and inspired to lead the next generation.
