ASSESSING OUR GLOBAL CONDITION

As usual, the December issue of The Architectural Review is devoted to the work of younger architects from around the world (this year from 50 countries). As in previous years, it was a pleasure to take part in the judging, not least because of the optimism and determination evident in the work of so many of the entrants. Common concerns in respect of housing, the environment, urbanism and materials, produced work of an extraordinary variety and quality, as can be seen from the contents of this issue; a question which arises is the extent to which architectural culture can be described as universal, or a series of separate cultures with a faint but indeterminate connection.
